#KEYIDEAS from „The Languages of Leadership: How to use your words, actions and behaviours to influence your team, peers and boss“ by Wendy Born

The key lessons learned from
„The Languages of Leadership: How to use your words, actions and behaviours to influence your team, peers and boss“ by Wendy Born

  •  Don’t blame others. Improve yourself and focus on your leadership. Focus on the things you can control (see „Circle of concern“).
  • In order to improve you first need to assess your leadership level. There are 6 levels of leaders:
    1) Isolated leader (only work with a hand full of people, focus primarily on themself)
    2) Interested leader (slightly more engaged, not too much respect from colleagues
    3) Involved leader (team players, get the job done, performance average)
    4) Integrated leader (noticed, and people are impressed, potential but no big success yet)
    5) Influenced leader (active inside and outside their organizations, getting things done, hard workers)
    6) Inspired leader (innovators, work with every level in the corporate ladder) -> level to aspire to
  • 3 different leadership skill sets– you need all three:
    1) Active leader: being courageous, be prepared and stay for what you believe in (integrity), show strength: willing to make tough decisions (while not destroying morale, say „No“ if necessary, set deadlines), still think about your people and show empathy and respect
    2) Directive leader: engineer your environment and communicate the reasons of your actions (transparent) and also advocate control to your team (delegation)
    3) Perceptive leader: build trust (e.g. transparency, advocate power), credibility, fairness and encourages vulnerability (share your story & minor failures, ask for feedback to involve your people, empathize with your people on a personal level)

Sum up: There are different aspects of great leadership. Everything is based on trust. In general you need to use different leadership skills sets in different situations.

For more details I can recommend to read the whole book:
